Listening Strategies

·         Take notes

Taking accurate notes quickly is the most important TOEFL skill. It is both a mental and a physical ability. It's physical because by moving your hand faster and typing faster, you can write more notes than someone else. Also, it is mental because you need to summarize sentences, shorten words, identify the most important parts of a sentence, and discard unnecessary statements.

·         Get to know the organization

Another important aspect of TOEFL Listening is knowing the organization of the Lectures. ETS has even listed the organization types on its website.

·         Signs

We may have mentioned this above, but it is very important to pay attention to the signals when you are listening to a TOEFL conversation or lecture.

Dialogs with Sound Confusion

Preview the quiz before answering anything. This makes you think about the material. Be sure to write down the point value for each question. This will give you some ideas on how to budget your time. Quickly calculate how much time to spend on each section based on the point value. (It is not advisable to spend 30 minutes on an essay question that only counts 5 points). Do a mind dump. Using what you saw in the preview, take notes of anything you think you might forget. Write down the things you used to learn the material that might help you remember. Summarize your responses to the discussion questions.

Anticipating Questions about extended Conversations

To anticipate questions, simply review your presentation and consider what someone might ask. If you've created a lean presentation, you've already addressed many of the logical questions; Your presentation will naturally follow a line of thought.
